Hurricane Appeal: Haiti Needs Your Help
Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike have devastated islands across the Caribbean. Our team in Haiti has redeployed to the south and north corners of the island, setting up mobile clinics in the temporary shelters. In a country where 70% of the population already live in poverty, move lives are at risk from mud slides, swollen rivers and there is high risk of disease spreading amongst the displaced population.

We have been working in Haiti since 1994, providing primary care and supporting victims of violence.

Project:London Launches Year Two ReportKey findings:
- We saw no evidence of the so-called ‘health tourist’ who comes to the UK seeking expensive treatment. Our patients had been in the UK for an average of 3 years before accessing care.
|
 |
And our findings confirm what a number of other independent studies have shown, that migrants and British citizens have similar health profiles and that migrants are no more likely to have expensive, complicated medical needs than anyone else.
- We saw a worrying number of pregnant women (118) who had difficulty accessing proper care. Although they were entitled, nearly 70% of the women had no access to care before coming to the clinic. This lack of access puts both mother and child in jeopardy and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.
- Rather than saving money, the proposed government changes on health regulations would only result in greater costs because:
- Lack of GP access means no chance of preventing diseases
- Lack of GP access means no chance of early and affordable treatment of diseases – including those which are contagious
- Lack of GP access is likely to lead to increased pressure on already burdened A&E departments.

MdM UK and its coalition partners call upon the UK government to address the tragedy unfolding in Gaza. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worse now than at any time since the occupation began in 1967. The situation is documented in a report published by a coalition of leading humanitarian and human rights organisations comprising Amnesty International, CARE International UK, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Médecins du Monde UK, Oxfam, Save The Children UK and Trócaire.
This the report “The Gaza Strip: A humanitarian implosion” urges the UK government to take the following immediate steps to avoid further deterioration:
* Exert greater pressure on the Israeli government to open the crossings into Gaza and stop fuel and electricity cuts in order to stem the worsening humanitarian crisis. * Help facilitate a process of Palestinian reconciliation that can lead to a credible and effective peace process with Israel. * Abandon the failed policy of non-engagement and begin negotiations with all Palestinian parties, including Hamas.
Read more about our campaigning regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
UPDATE Since the publication of the report, Médecins du Monde UK has learned that Munir, the man unable to leave Gaza for cancer treatment, is in Jordan where he is receiving the treatment he needs. This is good news for him. We hope this is the first of many stories which will be told in the days to come of improvements in the lives of those in Gaza.
