MDM launches mass vaccination campaign in eastern Jebal Marra, Sudan

Early detection by our volunteers of meningitis type A in the east of the Jebal Marra region, leads to an emergency vaccination campaign.

In early April our team reported 10 cases of the disease. In response, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and local communities, an emergency mass vaccination campaign was set up.  Roll out begins on 25th of April and will run until 8th of May 2009. The aim is to vaccinate everyone under 30 years old; around 65 000 people in total. The site has already received the vaccines and training has begun for the vaccination teams.

Médecins du Monde has been working for over 2 years with the rural communities in this remote region on a programme that aims to restore access to primary health care by focusing on maternal and child health and malnutrition. Over the past year MDM teams have conducted around 2 000 consultations per week.

The teams were evacuated on March 1st because of an increase in fighting in the area, but were able to return on April 6th. The primary health care and reproductive health activities were maintained during this period thanks to the work of the local medical personnel.

An international team of Médecins du Monde enters the Gaza strip

After many days of negotiations, a international medical team of Médecins du Monde has entered the Gaza strip to support our local teams and medical structures which are still operating under dramatic circumstances.

A team of doctors and surgeons from Médecins du Monde France and Spain has entered the Gaza Strip, through Rafah, at the Egyptian border. “We are impatient to support the medical teams in the strip that have been working in extremely difficult conditions for three weeks and to help the population still trapped inside this warzone” says Marc Van der Mullen, coordinator of the emergency mission of Médecins du Monde. Gaza is now in a full-blown humanitarian crisis as 1.5 million people are in dire need of food, water and medical supplies as Israel's round-the-clock bombardment  hampers relief efforts. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worse now than at any time since the occupation began in 1967.

The report
“The Gaza Strip: A humanitarian implosion” urges the UK government to take the following immediate steps to avoid further deterioration:
    *  Exert greater pressure on the Israeli government to open the crossings into Gaza and stop fuel and electricity cuts in order to stem the worsening humanitarian crisis.
    * Help facilitate a process of Palestinian reconciliation that can lead to a credible and effective peace process with Israel.
    * Abandon the failed policy of non-engagement and begin negotiations with all Palestinian parties, including Hamas.

Project:London Launches Year Two Report

Key findings:
  • We saw no evidence of the so-called ‘health tourist’

  • We saw a worrying number of pregnant women
PL report 2007
  • Rather than saving money, the proposed government changes on health regulations would only result in greater costs because:
    • Lack of GP access means no chance of preventing diseases
    • Lack of GP access means no chance of early and affordable treatment of diseases – including those which are contagious
